The Rio Road area is located just a few miles north of the city of Charlottesville and is a popular choice for those who wish to live in Albemarle County, but commute downtown. Although the Blue Ridge Mountains are all around, Rio Road is home to one of the biggest intersections in Albemarle County. The Rio Road area is quite busy relative to other nearby areas, but the neighborhoods are wonderful and the sense of community is strong. The Fashion Square Mall on Rio Road is the only indoor mall in the area and offers over 75 shops and restaurants including Belk, J.Crew, Coach, Sears, Red Robin, Chick-fil-A, and Starbucks. There is also free Wi-Fi and a children’s indoor play area where you will find coffee-drinking moms watching their kids tire themselves for afternoon naps. A word of caution, candy machines and four-horse carousal are also near the play area. So either bring a roll of quarters or be prepared for some whining from the kids. The Rio Hill Shopping Center is home to the new and improved JoAnn Fabrics, T.J. Maxx, Crutchfield, Lowes, and Kroger. If an afternoon of errands demands a little treat, there is also a Chick-fil-A with drive through. Be forewarned that it is an extremely popular lunch spot so be prepared to wait. When dining in, the indoor play area is well-maintained, clean, and a huge crowd pleaser with the kids.
Lime Leaf offers consistently good Thai food in the Rio Hill Shopping Center, Maharaja Fine Indian Cuisine has a great reputation around town, and Chandler’s Bakery in Albemarle Square is a yummy option for locally baked treats.
Pen Park is a popular choice for those in Rio Road area. It is one of the biggest parks in the county with a large playground and a toddler-sized play area, so the older kids can enjoy the park as much as the little ones. The huge open field is often filled with picnic blankets and soccer balls. During the summer and fall months, this location is home to a charming farmer’s market comprised of local farmers and crafters. Also located on Pen Park Road is the Meadowcreek Golf Course, which is a beautiful public course that is refreshingly affordable.
